2x Upscale – Double Your Image Size
Need to double your image size? 2x upscaling is the most common enlargement need – modest enough to maintain excellent quality, significant enough to make a real difference.
What 2x Upscaling Means
Dimensions: Both width and height double (1000×750 → 2000×1500)
Pixel count: Total pixels increase 4x (750K → 3M pixels)
Quality: Excellent results from almost any source
2x is the sweet spot for upscaling – substantial improvement with minimal compromise.
2x Upscaling Uses
Print size doubling: 4×6 print → 8×12 print capability
Display optimization: HD content → near-4K quality
Cropping room: More resolution for creative cropping
Archive improvement: Upgrade older photos for modern standards
2x vs. Higher Upscaling
2x: Best quality, suitable for most needs
4x: More enlargement, slightly more processing
8x: Maximum enlargement, source-quality dependent
Start with 2x unless you specifically need more. You can always upscale again if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
2x upscale means doubling both the width and height of an image, resulting in an image with four times as many total pixels. For example, a 1000×1000 pixel image becomes 2000×2000 pixels after 2x upscaling. This is the most conservative upscaling factor and produces excellent results from almost any source image.
Whether 2x upscaling is sufficient depends on your source resolution and target print size. Calculate your needs: multiply desired print dimensions (inches) by 300 DPI. If 2x upscaling reaches that target, it's sufficient. For example, if you have a 6×4 inch image at 300 DPI (1800×1200 pixels) and want an 8×12 print, 2x upscaling gives you 3600×2400 pixels – more than the 2400×3600 needed.
2x upscaling generally produces better quality per pixel than 4x because the AI has more original information to work with. However, 4x may be necessary to reach your target resolution. For most sources, 2x produces excellent, nearly flawless results. 4x still produces good results but may show slight softness compared to native resolution. Use the smallest factor that meets your needs.
Use 2x upscaling when it meets your resolution requirements – there's no benefit to upscaling more than necessary. 2x is ideal for modest enlargements, preparing images for standard HD displays, moderate print size increases, or when working with lower-quality sources that may not handle higher upscaling factors well.
While you can technically apply 2x upscaling multiple times (2x twice equals 4x total), it's better to use a single 4x upscaling operation. Multiple upscaling passes compound any artifacts or errors from earlier stages. Our AI upscaler can handle larger factors in single operations for better quality than repeated smaller upscaling.
